Onshimgil: AI-Powered Safe Shelter Guide for Elderly Residents

  • 2026.07.01 - 2026.09.30

1. Opening Hook

Every summer and winter, extreme weather puts our elders at risk. During a heatwave or cold snap, the nearest help may be just minutes away on foot — but knowing where it is, whether it's open, and how to get there safely is often the hardest part.

Onshimgil (“the warm path home”) is an AI-powered mobile guide that instantly finds the safest, closest, and currently available shelter for elderly users — and helps them get there safely.

2. The Problem

Public shelters, senior centers, and cooling/warming stations already exist across Gyeonggi Province — but their information is scattered across government spreadsheets, PDFs, and websites. Existing map apps only optimize for distance, ignoring whether a shelter is actually open, safe to reach, or designated for heat/cold relief.

  • Seniors struggle with small text, multi-step searches, and unfamiliar apps.
  • The “nearest” shelter is not always the safest or the most accessible one.
  • Walking routes may cross known senior pedestrian-accident zones.
  • Caregivers have no easy way to check on a loved one's safety in real time.

3. Our Solution

[IMAGE] Clean app mockup: a large-font shelter recommendation card with a distance, an open/closed badge, and a one-tap call button.

Onshimgil combines Gyeonggi public data (senior welfare centers, cooling/warming shelters, bus stops, senior pedestrian-accident zones) with real-time weather alerts from the Korea Meteorological Administration. Our AI scores every nearby shelter on distance, operating status, weather suitability, transit access, walking safety, and data reliability — then recommends the single best option in plain language.

With no more than four taps, a user can see a recommended shelter, get a safe walking or transit route that avoids accident-prone areas, call the shelter directly, or share their route with a caregiver.

4. How It Works

  • Step 1 — Open the app: current location and a “find shelter” button appear immediately.
  • Step 2 — Check the situation: heatwave, cold snap, or general status is shown automatically.
  • Step 3 — Get a recommendation: the top 1–3 shelters appear as simple cards, each with the reason it was chosen.
  • Step 4 — Go safely: turn-by-turn walking or bus directions avoid known accident hotspots.
  • Step 5 — Stay connected: one tap calls the shelter, emergency services, or shares the route with a caregiver.

5. Why It's Different

General map apps optimize for shortest distance and ignore shelter status or walking safety. Public welfare directories list facilities but require multiple searches through static pages. Emergency-alert apps broadcast regional warnings but give no personal, situation-specific guidance. Onshimgil is the first to combine all of this into one elder-friendly recommendation, built entirely on verified public data — never guessed or invented.

6. Our Team

We are ShareSpring, a five-person team combining engineering, AI development, UX research, and community volunteer experience with elderly residents in Yongin and Seongnam. Our mission is simple: turn public data that already exists into a lifeline that elders can actually use.
